A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. – Proverbs 17:22
About Me – Andrea Lopez – Owner of www.wellnessheiress.com
Welcome to Wellness Heiress! I’m Andrea Lopez, owner of this blog, and I’m sure we all have a general understanding of what “wellness” is. But let’s look at what the Oxford dictionary describes as wellness:
Wellness: “The state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.”
Good health, especially as an actively pursued goal… huh…
Knowing that I’m navigating the new and ambiguous waters of my own wellness journey, I can’t help but stop and reflect at “good health.” Doesn’t get any more straightforward than that.
And no, I’m not a wellness expert, nor a doctor, nor anything of the likes. But believe me, if I started a blog about it, well…let’s just say I’m obsessed. Little did I know that “wellness” was a foreign concept that I could care less about but yet would quickly encompass my entire life. I sat on a hospital bed after struggling for months with severe insomnia. So, in fact, these very words you are reading are written by a northern Jersey girl who’s been a master at putting herself and her health last for years. I kindly leave my qualifications at the door because they simply don’t exist.
As you navigate the tabs you’ll find all sorts of miscellaneous content – diary entries, interviews, shopping logs, essays, – a culmination of what wellness should look like, I think. An array of the things that make you feel…well. For me personally, it is all of those things, but especially, my love for writing, which I’ve abandoned in my 7 year sprint in survival mode.
Wellness Heiress is a first person account of all I’ve navigated throughout my own in my wellness journey while living alone just across the Hudson River in Jersey City. To add, being a woman of color, specifically, a first-gen Latina in the US (and in the NY area which is also a key theme in my content), I’ve often found myself Googling and YouTubing my wellness journey away only to find that 99% of the content was not relatable to me. Below are some blatant thoughts that came up as I’ve gone down the rabbit hole online trying to figure out how to get my nervous system back in tact:
- I don’t have $20k to invest in a chronic fatigue program, also what even is that?
- I’m definitely not flexible enough for that yoga pose
- I’m not interested in traveling to anther country to get a detox with exotic herbs, pretty sure I can do that here
- What can I do that won’t take up too much of my time or money and help me feel better? Jesus Christ!
Oh yeah…that’s right – Jesus Christ. I forgot about Him. And for the first time in seven years, I decided to give Him a full chance. Game changer. The entire theme of wellness changed for me and I quickly realized, He was everything our generation is missing.
Anxiety. Depression. Mental fog and fatigue. Gen Z constitutes the majority percentages for these conditions but yet turns to social media, substance abuse, and escapism to cope. I turned to God. And that is what I want to share.
This blog is for the part of me who wants to just, well, be well. The truth is, in the spirit of adulting, I’ve tried my best to seem put together and mask the mental and physical health challenges that have aggressively transpired my throughout the first half of my twenties. Secretly battling insomnia in February 2023 slowly snowballed into a crippling condition I had no idea how to conquer. Feeling more tired than usual, navigating hair loss, and being overwhelmed in the supermarket trying to pick out the best nutrition options were common phenomena in my crisis. And that doesn’t even include the complex state of my spiritual health…I’ll keep it short for the about section, feel free to lose yourself in the tabs lol.
But most importantly, this blog is also a symbolic stunt to hold myself accountable to figuring it out. Consider it my passion project where I culminate the techy stuff I learn from work and my love for writing. I guess, all in all, that is what this blog is about.
I hope this site is as helpful and entertaining for you as I know it will be for me. To learn more about me or find out what I’m up to, feel free to follow the socials above!
And most importantly –
Be well,
Andrea.
