Intro to Building Trust in God
The most daunting and necessary part of Christian faith is learning how to trust God. But if you get really real, you’ll realize that’s the basis of any relationship… familial, romantic, work wise … and like the old saying goes, if you don’t have trust, you don’t have anything. I can’t help but think of my relationship with God as a parental, friendly, reciprocal, and loving one. And how exactly does one grow to trust a parent, friend, and lover? The exact same criteria that lead to a trusting relationship with Him are what I plan to use as a guide for this very journey of mine… It is of course, by the grace of the Holy Spirit that I’ve been able to dive into these things…
Get to Know God’s Word
How can you know someone you don’t trust? Very simple – you can’t. The best way to trust Him is to get to know Him, and the best way to get to know Him, is through the living word. The bible as we know it today is everything that that we need in order to get to know Him, what he wants from us, and also how to live according to his principles. If you read enough of the Word, you’ll get to know about God’s faithfulness. You see, there’s plenty of stories in the bible that time and time again, show us that God never fails us. We see plenty of stories and parables where, even where the protagonists were in the toughest of times and saw no light at the end of the tunnel, if they remained faithful to Him, he remained faithful to them. God’s plans always includes prospering and protecting us. A lot of time, we get so inundated in our day to day lives that we forget how to get His faithfulness because we don’t take the sufficient amount of time to get to know him through his word. Biblestudytools.com tells us to “check yourself by God’s word” because it is the only way in which we can grow in trust in the Lord.
Live Out the Christian Life
The only way to live out the Christian Life is according to the word. Of course, we know this is not always easy or else everyone else would be doing it. When bad things happen in our everyday lives, it’s easy to revert back to our old ways and fail into cheap temptations that make us feel above our issues, which are often temporary. But by doing good work in accordance to the word and following the example that Jesus Christ laid out for us, we can combat this always. It is in difficult times that we get to test out the Christian life anyhow, and it is in these moments that our trust is put to the test.
Ask Him for the Desires of Your Heart
When we humble ourselves before our heavenly father and ask Him for the desires of our heart, we are saying, “God, I’m asking you because I trust YOU to grant me this.” It is not by the power of our own humanly strength that we accomplish great wis, but by the power of Him in our lives. You see, the Promises of God include eternal life, peace, and salvation, and so He will always make sure to grant us those desires if they further promote His Kingdom, His goodness, and therefore, his trustworthiness.
He is Worthy of Our Trust
In the Book of Job, we see that Job was a strong and faithful leader and ethical man of God. However, all that integrity instilled in his daily life still did not prevent chaos and burden. When he lost his fortune and family, he had every right to lose the third “f” – faith, but still did not. Although he pleaded and cried to Christ Jesus during his distress, the first thing he did want defend his faith to his friends, who quickly accused him of sin. Still god’s goodness is seen in the end, when God more than doubled everything he had lost. This is just one of the many stories where we see that He is worthy of our trust, always, even when it seems like He is far or mercy and grace are not near.
Trusting God Involves Surrendering and Relying on His Wisdom and Plan for our Lives
It is about letting go of our own understanding and trusting in His. This is achieved through prayer, reading His word, and practicing faith even in the face of uncertainty. Recognize His unconditional love, His wisdom, and His power and know that He will guide you through challenging times. It’s also important to have patience and wait upon God’s timing, understanding that His plans are often different from ours, but always for our good.
